The Phobic Flyer
United Kingdom
Приєднався 13 гру 2008
I've always had a massive phobia of flying. Whenever I went on holiday, I had to psych myself up for a few days to prepare for the flight. In 2013 whilst contracting at EE, my line manager (BC) offered to take me & my family up in a plane from Cardiff International Airport & I I finally got my Private Pilots License in October 2020. It wasn’t easy as the phobia would kick in during lesson & was really debilitating. I am also a keen VR SIMmer & X-Plane 11 has really helped me with real world flying, especially when flying a Nav for the first time as I can comfortably fly this with photo scenery & in VR at home. I am a CAA qualified Commercial Drone pilot under my Ltd Company, Ringtone.net Ltd & under this I also setup Severn FM Radio in June 2011 & this is still going strong. I am also a Reiki II practitioner & a licensed Radio Ham & I love playing the piano by ear.
Day job is Mobile Networks under Ringtone.net Ltd which operates this UA-cam channel & The Phobic Flyer in general.

2 Landings - 1st is flat, the 2nd is OK.
I was asked by my CFI to put this short clip together so he can see what I am doing with the yoke, so you can see how the wheels are placed.

Yearly Check Ride - I went to pieces! (F.O.F.W.O.P.P.)

In this video, I take you along on my yearly check ride with the experienced Captain Caz. Even though I'm no longer scared of flying, I couldn't help but feel a bit anxious about this flight. It seems I might have developed a new kind of phobia-FOFWOPP, or Fear of Flying with Other Pilots Phobia! Join me as I face this challenge head-on and push through my nerves. Recorded at the end of May 202...

Fantastic sound! My father used to fly them during WW2. Logged over 2000 hrs.

Never mind, we all have those days. Good to meet you today, glad you saw me waving on departure - caught up with the stream when I got home. (ZL driver).
@@pfield39 great to meet you earlier Steve, and we definately saw you waving. It must have taken you ages to walk round?? 😳
@@ThePhobicFlyer Yes, it was over 3 miles round trip, nearly had a Michael Mosley moment. On my biannual in a Warrior in 2021 we had a near collision with a gyrocopter which approached from below/right, instructor spotted it at the last second or two and yanked the yoke to the right to avoid, just. We were getting a basic from Farnborough. Closest I've been to a mid air in 52 years! We filed, of course. Keep up the good work!
@@pfield39 3 miles? Crikey and that doesn't sound good about the Gyrocopeter....I had a go in one in June...quite liked it.
There were certainly times when the situation got ahead of you and you distracted yourself but I totally understand the FOFWOP. I don't like driving with other people so have FODWOD. I've not had a car for 6 years so quietly dread my first day back on the road. I'd hate for my first drive in ages to be with a driving instructor, regardless of how friendly they were.
@@Payne2view cheers Robert. I think more people suffer from things like this than let on. I know I’ve made it light hearted in the video, but I am sure more people are like this 👍

If you want to practice (in flight sim) for not landing until the runway, do a video of you doing right hand circuits at GCFV Fuerteventura runway 01... ;)
@@PilotPeter Definitely will try that Pete. Not used the SIM for ages.
Awesome! 12:43 was a butterrr! You should be proud of that one!
@@BritishAviation1734 thanks Ollie 👍
I enjoyed the ride along, thanks. Nice to see Glos in the evening sunshine. It was the first landing on my QXC, so fond memories ❤. Club rules at our place is 6 weeks max otherwise you need a quick checkout with an instructor! PS, be careful when taking pax to make sure you meet the CAA rules of having done 3 TO and Landings in prev 90 days 😉
Cool, thanks for the comments. I have a spreadsheet which shows my last flight and my last flight with respect to the 90 day rule for passengers. Then I write on whiteboard on my wall. It was 6 weeks for me until I hit 50hours P1 then it’s two months. 👍👍
Well done, it was nice to reminisce, must be 40 years since I last flew hands on, Cessna 172 out of Fairoaks. I’m afraid life got in the way and my ppl lapsed. Enjoy your streams.

Excellent…. Cheers Paul 😂👍
Gyrocopters occupy that space in Aviation for me between "would love to" and "no way mate". I know they are safe but nah, give me something with wings sticking out each side.
I know that you mean and that’s exactly what I thought before I got in one. Worth a go if you have never been in one 👍
Time 5.56 my m8 won a prize to taxi it that one he sent me the video 😊
Massive aircraft and so iconic. Looks like it needs a bit of a new paint job though.
@@ThePhobicFlyer yes ,they could get to takeoff speed on the run due to bad weather
A radio service is a valuable thing I’m sure the people who provide it don’t want to be under the magnifying glass all day, leave them to get on with it
Get yourself a gyroplane if you want turbulence free flying
I did really enjoy the flight I had in one at Airfest. Really smooth and graceful! 👍😀
Im so gutted i remember seeing this aircraft on 360radar flying over me
super cool!
I've seen worse landings 😂. I was pretty tired coming back from a nice 1.5 hr local flight last week. Lots of turning points because I was sightseeing, solo so doing all lookout etc. Did my worst landing in 2 years! Still have all my teeth so no panic 😂
Glad it’s not just me. As you say we still have all our teeth 😂
This was cool! I'm an American, right on the cusp of getting my private pilot certificate, so it's been cool seeing what aviation is like in the UK, and of course to get a look at this autogyro!
Thanks Clipped Wings! Good luck with your PPL - when is your check ride?
@@ThePhobicFlyer I've actually done it already! But there's some weird part 141 stuff going on that I honestly don't quite understand- but basically I have to finish my retake of my ground school, and then I'll have it mailed to me.
@@clippedwings225 That's great news on the Check Ride (we call it The Skill Test in the UK)...hopefully they'll be able to sort it and you'll get your well deserved PPL Certificate. 👍
@@ThePhobicFlyer thanks a lot!
The roar of the mighty Warrior. I was flying those 20 years ago. Got as far as my dual cross county, stopped after that. Planning on learning on a microlight this years, about a quarter of the cost for my licence
I love the PA28 range. Such an each aircraft to fly and very forgiving. I do agree though that the microlight aircraft give you very similar performance at much less cost.
I bet you enjoyed that Andy!
Love it mate, so chilled and relaxing.

just stumbled upon your channel, excellent job on the obu! always been curious about this kind of thing and its possibility to broadcast local football (different application i know). currently thinking of ways of doing something similar and would be curious as to cost outlays etc? or breakdown of basic kit to support 3-4 camera angles? maybe recommendations on lenses also for sport? thanks in advance!
Thanks for the kinds words. I decided to get a caravan which needed a fair amount of work to get it roadworthy so I got it for £1300. You could buy a road worthy one but pay more up front. I spent about £2K doing it up as It was just a shell really with a rotten floor. I just use video cameras (Sony FDR-AX53, Panasonic VX980 and HC-V480M for the static shots). I also use a Sony ZV-E10 with a few basic lenses (18 to 55, 30 and 12mm wide angle) for the 'piece to camera' shots and also mount on a Gimbal for the roaming around shots. 👍
Call me German pedantic, but .... weeeeeell, technically, with Amplitude modulation, ... while the frequency of the carrier wave on AM might remain constant, the frequency of the whole output technically is a multiplication of its inputs, thus the frequency content is not constant, identical, or fixed to the carrier wave. If you modulate a 1 kHz signal via AM on a 100 MHz carrier, you will end up with 100 Mhz, plus two lobes at plus and minus 1 kHz (unless you do SSB). So did "the" frequency remain constant? Also , sorry, but the RANGE of a signal does not depend on the modulation but on the frequency used. Arguably, FM would be better audible than AM on long distances. The reason why FM is "considered" shorter range is that usually it takes a 75 kHz frequency band to modulate the signal, which means that in general a FM audio transmission eats much more bandwidth. Because of this, they are moved to higher frequency, where more space is available. AM uses very little bandwidth (with SSB it is basically just the bandwidth of your input), and thus can be put on the HF band (SSB), which has a much farther propagation, with the ionosphere even across the horizon. That is why oceanic ATC is on HF, since it needs to reach across the Atlantic. However, all other AM transmission of ATC is in the same frequency range as FM radio broadcast, the only reason why it ranges farther than you'd expect on the 100+ MHz band is that planes are flying in the sky, thus having a much less obstructed line of sight on the transmission. It is as if you'd have a 10'000 feet high radio tower with direct sight to you. Plus the ATC band is cleared of any other noise. It has nothing to do with the modulation scheme, arguably AM is worse than FM because of static.
Thanks. Lots of good info there. Takes me back to my Principles of RF Comms days when I was an apprentice many years ago.
Are you watching television without licence in the UK? You’re probably breaking the law, too.
Not a pilot but these sorts of videos where GA pilots go through the entire process, including radio calls, are really interesting. Would be invaluable if you were training, but generally useful for understanding aviation protocols. Given that the content is broadcast on radio anyway, thus making it public, should be no issue with using it here for educational purposes.
Good points Dave! Thanks 🙏
Great behind the scenes there Clarkey, looking forward to getting down and seeing the studio in person and meeting the rest of the team soon!
Thanks Peter and will be great to see you mate! 👍✈️
